Part 1: Importance of Purity
Praise be to Allah, who created and proportioned everything and who loves those who are pure and repentant. Peace and blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, companions and those who follow his path. Allah loves those who purify themselves. Purity is so important that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Purity is half of faith” [Muslim].
Prayer, which is the pillar of Islam is not valid without purification. Purification comes in two types:
- Minor purification (Wudu): Washing before prayer.
- Major purification (Ghusl): Full body wash in certain cases.
Part 2: When Ghusl is Required
- Emission of semen (Ejaculation): If semen comes out, Ghusl is obligatory.
- If someone wakes up and sees semen, they must perform Ghusl.
- If they dream of ejaculation but no fluid appears, Ghusl is not required.
- Small traces without a full emission in wakefulness do not require Ghusl.
- Sexual intercourse: Even if ejaculation does not occur, Ghusl is required if the private parts touch.
These are the main two reasons, but there are others not mentioned here for brevity.
Part 3: How to Perform Ghusl
- Obligatory method (minimum):
- Make the intention to purify yourself.
- Pour water over the entire body.
- Hair does not need to be untangled; just ensure water reaches the roots of the scalp.
- The skin must be washed fully.
- Recommended method (Sunnah):
- Make the intention and say Bismillah.
- Wash private parts.
- Perform Wudu (ablution).
- Wash the head in sections (right side, left side, top).
- Wash the body in sections (right side, left side).
- Wash the feet last.
Part 4: Teaching Children
It is obligatory for parents to teach their children the rules of Islam, including purification.
- The Prophet ﷺ said: “The father is responsible for his household” [Bukhari & Muslim].
- Allah says: “Protect yourselves and your families from the Fire” [Quran 66:6].
Parents must teach both sons and daughters. If the parent lacks knowledge, they should seek a teacher or provide Islamic educational materials.
Part 5: The Role of Modesty
Modesty is great in Islam, but there is no shame in learning religious knowledge.
- Women of knowledge were never prevented by modesty from studying religion.
Parents must ensure their children learn the rules of purity and other religious obligations. Children are a trust from Allah, and it is the responsibility of parents to guide them.
Dua (Supplication):
“O Allah, teach us what benefits us and benefit us with what You have taught us. Make us guided and among those who follow guidance.”
